When Scripture Becomes a Weapon: Understanding the Stress Response
In my last post, I shared how my husband once said, “Something’s not right, but I just can’t put my finger on it.”
When a church leader weaponizes scripture, it can be difficult to see the manipulation for what it is—especially because of the way our brains respond to stress.
If someone were to pull out a physical weapon to coerce you into doing something against your will, your brain would immediately engage its God-designed alarm system to protect you. The same thing happens when scripture is weaponized, though the "danger" is not immediately visible. Let’s explore how this works.
The Brain's Stress Response
The limbic system is the part of the brain responsible for activating our alarm system. It controls basic functions of survival, like the fight-or-flight response. Here’s what happens when you perceive danger:
The limbic system senses danger.
Stress hormones like adrenaline are released.
Higher-level thinking goes “offline.” The parts of your brain responsible for detailed reasoning and discernment shut down.
The left hemisphere, which processes language and logic, is disengaged.
Breathing becomes shallow.
Blood is redirected from the digestive system to your extremities, preparing you to fight or flee.
You might wonder, “Why would this happen in a church setting? I was safe and sitting in a pew!”
It’s because the danger doesn’t have to be physical. When someone uses scripture as a weapon—especially in a way that threatens your relationship with God—it triggers the same stress response as if you were physically under attack.
Fear as a Red Flag
Here’s the red flag: It is fear.
Think about how God dealt with Adam and Eve. He gave them the freedom to choose—even though He knew their wrong choice would lead to the death of His Son. God didn’t use fear or coercion to keep them from eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. He simply told them the truth and allowed them to decide.
Laura Story captures this beautifully in her song:
“He knows the depths of my heart and loves me the same.”
Your Protective Weapon
When fear grips your heart, remember this:
“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
The Greek word for fear in this verse refers to cowardice, timidity, or fear caused by a lack of moral strength. Fear-based manipulation isn’t from God.
I vividly remember sitting in church, gripped by fear that if I was too much, I might be “marked” or even preached about. That wasn’t the fear of the Lord; it was fear used as a tool for control.
Trusting God's Gentle Guidance
If you ever hesitate to follow someone's directive because it feels weaponized, remember that God is not out to trick you. He is big enough, loving enough, and patient enough to guide you back if you miss something.
God is a God of peace, not of fear. He doesn’t coerce us into obedience; He invites us into a relationship of trust and love. When you feel fear, let it be a signal—not to obey blindly, but to pause and seek His heart.
